Hilda Ertl

Watertown - Hilda Ida Ertl, age 98, passed away on February 25, 2016 at Highland House in Watertown with her daughters present. She was born on November 15, 1917, in Ixonia, WI, to Henry and Lydia (Schuett) Bartel. On May 10, 1941, she married George Ertl at St. Henry Catholic Church in Watertown. Hilda was a member of St. Henry Catholic Church and its Catholic Woman's Club and Christian Mother and Alter Fraternity. For many years she was a member of the Plattdeutscher Verein Auxiliary. Hilda also volunteered for many years at St. Vincent De Paul in Watertown. She was always known for her wonderful cooking and hospitality. Hilda also enjoyed playing cards, especially Sheepshead, and played almost up until the time of her death. Hilda is survived by her two daughters, Joyce Piper of Watertown and Patricia (Peter) Erickson of Rockford; six grandchildren, Dan (Sheryl) Piper of Eau Claire, Shelli Andros (Jim Schuppel) of Eau Claire, Brian Strunz of Watertown, Greg Strunz of Watertown, Brendan (Sara) Barry of Clearwater, FL and Kimberly (Steven) Ganser of Jefferson; nine great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Elaine Jaeger of Oconomowoc and Bernice Ertl of Watertown; son-in-law Phil Strunz; and other relatives and friends. Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; husband George, in 2002; a daughter Mary Strunz, in 1995; three brothers, Harold Bartel, William Jaeger and Frank Bartel; three sisters, Dorothy Griep, Eleanor Schilling and Viola Lampone; son-in-law, Dennis Piper; and a brother-in-law, Stuart Schilling. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to St. Henry Catholic Church, Watertown Highland House or Rainbow Hospice. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Henry Catholic Church, 412 N. 4th Street, Watertown on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at 11:00 AM. A visitation will also take place at the church on Thursday from 10:00 AM to Mass time. Burial will conclude at Glenview Memorial Gardens. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Watertown Highland House for their services and loving care shown to Hilda over the years and to Rainbow Hospice for their compassion and support during these past weeks.
