Robert James Coughlin

Robert James Coughlin of rural Watertown passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at the age of 86. Bob was born on August 23, 1938, in Watertown, son of William and Grace (Heppe) Coughlin.

He married Marie V. Gehring of Rubicon on April 25, 1959, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Rubicon. During their 66 years of marriage, Bob and Marie raised a family, operated a demolition contracting business, and served our Lord.

He continually demonstrated and instilled in his family the importance of loyalty, faithfulness, good character, and a strong work ethic. Bob was resourceful, intentional and humble. He was a member of Knights of Columbus and antique power clubs. He loved polka music, his Irish heritage, and historical Case tractors.

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Marie, and their nine children: Catherine of Horicon, Edward of Watertown, Debra (Carl) Schuett of Watertown, Linda (Bill) Miller of Oconomowoc, James (Helen) of Watertown, Steven (Angie) of Watertown, Joanne (Don) Duffek of Hartford, Mary (Mike) Rothschadl of Watertown and Ellen (Quentin) Maxwell of Dousman; 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his sisters Betty Powers and Joan Genske and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Francis, and daughter-in-law, Roxanna.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 30, 2025, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm at Schmutzler-Vick Funeral Home, 500 Welsh Road, Watertown, with a rosary starting at 8:00 pm.

On Thursday, July 31, 2025, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, visitation will be held at 10:00 am with a Mass of Christian Burial to begin at 11:00 am with Fr. David Drefcinski presiding. Interment will be at St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery immediately following Mass.

Bob was a prayerful, quiet man, in lieu of flowers or donations, Mass intentions would be appreciated for the repose of his soul.
